في خطاب ألقاه بواشنطن، ادعى ترمب أن رجلين من الإطفاء ضخمي البنية قاما بحمله من تحت ذراعيه وإبعاده عن مبنى يو إس ستيل المتاخم للأبراج، خوفاً من انهياره عليهما بعيد الهجمات مباشرة. وأوضح ترمب أنه أخبرهما بقدرته على الركض بمفرده، إلا أنهما أصرا على مساعدته.

أثارت هذه التصريحات تساؤلات حول دقة الروايات التي قدمها ترمب على مدى سنوات طويلة، والتي تباينت بين قوله إنه شاهد الأحداث من نافذة مكتبه، وبين حديثه عن إرسال عمال بناء للمساعدة، وصولاً إلى الرواية الأخيرة عن الإنقاذ الجسدي.

موقف فريق ترمب وأنصاره

في رد على التشكيك الصحفي، أكد المتحدث باسم فريق ترمب أن الأخير كان مواطناً عادياً في ذلك الوقت، ولم تكن تحركاته موثقة بالكامل بالكاميرات. من جهتهم، يرى أنصار ترمب أن الانتقادات الموجهة إليه تهدف إلى تسييس ذكريات 11 سبتمبر، مشيرين إلى أنه ظهر فعلياً في موقع جراند زيرو بعد الأحداث لتقديم الدعم.
